Centre for Environmental Living and Training

CELT

We are honoured to work alongside CELT, a community-focused registered charity committed to equipping individuals and communities with essential ecological knowledge and practical skills for sustainable living.

CELT and Slieve Aughty Centre

Slieve Aughty Centre partners with the Centre of Environmental Living and Training (CELT) because we share a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable living, and community education.

Working with CELT allows us to support traditional skills, biodiversity preservation, and hands-on learning that reconnects people with nature.

This collaboration is important to us because it aligns with our core values of sustainability, responsible tourism, and fostering a deeper respect for the natural world.

By hosting and supporting CELT’s activities, we help create meaningful opportunities for people to engage with the environment in practical, impactful ways that benefit both the local community and the wider ecosystem.

Celt Biodiversity
Preserving Biodiversity for Future Generations

Biodiversity is the foundation of a thriving environment, providing clean air, fresh water, and fertile soil essential for all living beings. However, Ireland faces an urgent crisis due to habitat destruction and unsustainable practices.

CELT is committed to addressing biodiversity loss through conservation efforts and community-driven solutions. Our submission to the Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss outlines practical steps to protect and restore Ireland’s rich natural heritage.

Restoring and supporting biodiversity
Wetlands come to life at Slieve Aughty Centre!
Exciting progress is underway on CELT’s wetland restoration project, part of our Biodiversity Action Plan Implementation funded by the Community Foundation Ireland and Burrenbeo Trust.
Just a few weeks after the new ponds were dug, they are already filling with water, bringing life back to the landscape. The former drainage ditch has been returned to a more natural, meandering form, with peat dams creating varied water levels and pools.

According to Julius, the pond and drain block locations were carefully selected to maximise ecological benefits while avoiding impacts on the hydrology of neighbouring farmland. It’s clear that these new habitats will play a vital role in supporting local biodiversity. We look forward to watching the wetlands flourish over the coming months as the project continues to take shape.
